Backpack Electrofishing Certification
June 16 - 17, 2025

Are you looking to obtain Backpack Electrofishing certification for your research or employment?

Our comprehensive course equips you with the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct stream surveys safely and effectively.

Course Overview

The electrofishing workshop includes both theoretical and practical components. Participants will learn the fundamental principles, safety protocols, and best practices of electrofishing. The course consists of a day of in-class sessions and a full day in the field for hands-on practice. The final half-day focuses on review and a written certification test.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts and practices of electrofishing.

  • Understand the electrical operating principles of an electrofishing unit.

  • Identify, operate, and troubleshoot electrofisher components.

  • Adjust electrofisher settings for effective fish capture.

  • Manage an electrofishing crew and operate safely in the field.

  • Minimize harm to fish and other wildlife during electrofishing.

Equipment Requirements

Ecopa provides Backpack Electrofishing equipment; however, participants may bring their own, provided it has been serviced within the last five years. Each participant must have:

  • Non-breathable, non-leaking chest waders.

  • Leak-free footwear, such as wading shoes or aggressive rubber boots.

  • Essential items like food and beverages for the field day.

Important Notes

The course aligns with previous provincial electrofisher certification requirements, but Ontario no longer certifies electrofishing. Users must demonstrate due diligence through training and assessment. While electrofishing certification is not a requirement for obtaining an MNR Licence to Collect Fish for Scientific Purposes, it serves as valuable training for safe and effective practices.
